On Monday, the Professional Women’s Hockey League unveiled the official names and logos for its six franchises, marking a significant milestone after the league's inaugural season began without them.

The new team names are:

Boston Fleet: Reflecting the city's maritime heritage, the logo subtly nods to the Hartford Whalers, an NHL team from 1979 to 1997. “It embodies the relentless and passionate spirit of representing Boston professionally,” said Boston captain and hockey legend Hilary Knight.

Minnesota Frost: This name pays homage to the state’s deep-rooted passion for ice hockey. PWHL VP of Brand & Marketing Kanan Bhatt-Shah noted that “Frost” emerged as a favored choice from many names considered, capturing the essence of Minnesota's hockey culture.

Montréal Victoire: The logo features a hidden "M" and a fleur-de-lis, symbolizing Québec. Senior VP of Business Operations Amy Sheer emphasized that the team’s French name was an intentional choice to honor Montreal and Québec, regardless of where they play.

New York Sirens: This name evokes the sounds of New York City and the excitement of a goal being scored, rather than Greek mythology. Although the color scheme resembles other New York teams, it’s coincidental rather than deliberate.

Ottawa Charge: Inspired by the city’s motto, “Advance – Ottawa – En Avant,” the name reflects both the city’s identity and the vibrant energy of its fans. Captain Brianne Jenner hopes that fans will embrace the name and its connection to the team's dynamic spirit.

Toronto Sceptres: Drawing on the city’s reputation as the Queen City, the name “Sceptres” symbolizes power and strength, aligning with Toronto’s royal connection.

The PWHL had initially used geographic labels for the teams, such as “PWHL Toronto,” and a primary color scheme last season. These colors have been incorporated into the new logos to maintain continuity for fans.

Director Tim Burton, known for his unconventional choices, previously used Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O” in the original 1988 film "Beetlejuice." The PWHL's selection of the new team names involved a comprehensive process, including fan interviews and monitoring social media for suggestions. The league partnered with the creative agency Flower Shop to develop these identities and consulted with the NHL to ensure there were no conflicts with existing team names.

The league also acquired the Premier Hockey Federation’s assets in 2023, including team names from previous locations. However, the PWHL opted to establish entirely new names to create its own distinct history.

New team jerseys are currently in production and are expected to be available by late October or early November. The 2024-25 PWHL regular season will feature 30 games per team, including neutral-site games.
