Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke was dismissed on Monday, with the university citing the need for new leadership to navigate "a new era in college athletics."
Chancellor Joan Gabel expressed gratitude for Lyke's contributions since her arrival in 2017. "Heather guided our program through a transformative period in college athletics, and we appreciate her leadership," Gabel said in a statement. "As we move into a rapidly evolving landscape, we need a new vision and a new leader for our athletics department."
Sources indicated that Lyke and Gabel, who was formally inaugurated as Pitt's chancellor in April, had differing views on several issues, including NIL.
Jennifer Tuscano, the executive associate athletics director, will serve as interim athletics director while the search for a permanent replacement begins.
During her tenure, Lyke significantly elevated the athletics department's profile: the football team won the ACC championship in 2021; the women's volleyball team reached the Final Four three times; and the men's soccer team advanced to the College Cup twice in the past four seasons. Last year, she was honored with the 2023 Cushman & Wakefield AD of the Year Award by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
In an interview with ESPN earlier this year, Lyke expressed enthusiasm about her future at Pitt, saying, "I feel great about it. I love it. I love the people. I love my new chancellor. We’ve got an awesome board. I’ve got an awesome group of coaches and the right number of sports. I’m a Midwest kid. It fits me. I’m really happy."
Despite this, Lyke was recently a finalist for the Northwestern AD position and had been exploring other opportunities, including a potential role at Ohio State earlier this year. Her contract was set to expire in June 2025, and while discussions about an extension were ongoing, an agreement was not reached.
