ARROW COUNTY, Ga. — Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, was placed on a hard lockdown earlier today due to a serious incident.
School officials reported that the lockdown was initiated following reports of gunfire. FOX 5 Atlanta received numerous calls and messages about a possible shooting and has dispatched a crew to the scene.
SkyFOX 5 is currently flying overhead, and emergency responders are visible treating individuals at the school. At least two people have been seen being transported by helicopter to local hospitals.
A significant law enforcement presence is at the school.
Just before 11:30 a.m., the school informed FOX News that the lockdown has been lifted, and students are being released to their families. Parents can pick up their children from the school, and buses will also be available for those needing transportation. The school has promised to provide additional information as soon as possible.
The Barrow County Sheriff's Office will post updates on their Facebook page. Apalachee High School, which serves approximately 1,900 students, is one of two high schools in the Barrow County Public Schools district. The school is situated about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.
